Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980) occupies a central position in the Latin American avant-garde of the postwar era. Associated with the Rio de Janeiro-based neo-concretist movement at the beginning of his career, Oiticica moved from object production to the creation of chromatically opulent and sensually engulfing large-scale installations or wearable garments. Building on the idea for a film by Brazilian underground filmmaker Neville D'Almeida, Oiticica developed the concept for Block-Experiments in Cosmococa—Program in Progress (1973–1974) as an “open program”: a series of nine proposals for environments, each consisting of slide projections, soundtracks, leisure facilities, drawings (with cocaine used as pigment), and instructions for visitors. Eduardo de Almeida es un nuevo libro de la colección "Materiales de Arquitectura. Documentos", con la que quiero rendir un homenaje personal a unos amigos que son, además, excelentes arquitectos. Dicho homenaje se centra en el ámbito de lo visual, a partir de la dimensión critica de la mirada: se trata, en definitiva, de proponer una visita conjunta a las obras del autor que me han parecido de mayor interés, entre las que he podido visitar. Con este modo de proceder sigo fiel a mi ya antigua reivindicación de la mirada como instancia constructiva y a la visualidad como dimensión esencial de lo arquitectónico. Me aproximó a Eduardo mi interés por conocer al autor de un muro de ladrillo cuya relación plástica y constructiva-visual, en definitiva- con el hormigón que lo remataba en su parte superior revelaba, tras una aparente naturalidad, el trabajo de un arquitecto preciso y sensible. Su personalidad y el resto de su arquitectura no defraudaron mis expectativas iniciales.
